Gordon took up the pianoforte at aged 5 before joining Bedhampton Boys Brass Band on Tenor Horn at the age of 12.
Having enlisted as an Army bandsman in January 1961 he studied the French horn under firstly, Kurt Blank of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and subsequently under Alfred Cursue of the Philharmonia Orchestra.
He studied music at the Royal Military School of Music and received instruction in conducting from Morris Miles; professor of conducting at the Royal Academy. He subsequently gained a Fellowship at Trinity College.
Gordon was appointed Bandmaster of the Queens Lancashire Regiment in 1972 before teaching at the Kings Division School of Music in York where he studied for an external BMus(hons) degree.
He was subsequently appointed School Bandmaster at Kneller Hall, then Bandmaster of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Anglian Regiment. He was commissioned into the Royal Tank Regiment as Director of Music to the Junior Leaders Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps and subsequently became Director of Music; the Light Division.
Gordon is a keen golfer and loves to polish Auntie Flo; his 1963 Rover P4 110 saloon. He also enjoys singing Bass with amateur choirs.
